Cheerleading

This page is going to include a lot of facts. The main idea of this page is to get more people to take cheerleading more seriously. Although it might seem as if cheerleading is all about skirts and screaming go team! It's not. What a lot of people don't know is that in 2008 cheerleading was ranked second most dangerous sport. Durring someones cheering season not only can a busy schedule come, but a lot of stress is packed on along with nervous and anxious feelings. Cheerleading is so dangerous that it's even been on the news. theres been more then 5 cheerleading deaths from cheerleading in the United States. Here are some links to prove my facts.

In this page I will be going over many things about cheering. The things i will inform u about are:

The different types of cheering

The dangers of cheering

uniforms

bows, hair and makeup

sneakers

rules

Rutines

What else cheerleaders do

Basics of cheering

The history behind cheering

There are many different types of cheering. They pretty much all do the same thing, but there are lots of different leagues. Here are the mostt common types of leagues:

-School sponcerd cheerleading (college, highschool, middleschool)

-Youth league sponcerd cheerleading (popwarner,AFU)

-All star cheerleading

-Perfessional cheerleading(for state teams ex: celtics cheerleaders)

School sponcerd cheerleading consists college, highschool and middleschool teams. About every highschool in the United Sates has a cheerleading program. Most highschools have to cheerleading teams, a varsity and junior varsity. The most common way for girls and boys to sign up is at tryouts held by a coach of staff. Students go through a number of tests to really show if they are good enough to make a team.

Youth league cheerleading is an also very common type of cheering. Almost every town should have a popwarner or youth league team. Teams don't just cheer for the players, they compete at competitions all the way to nationals. Nationals is the biggest tital any youth cheerleading squad can get. Winning first means best in the nation. Teams go through a series of competitions. Most common competitions to get to nationals are first league competition: top 2 teams move on to the following competiton. Next another league competition where teams from out of your area come to compete: the top 2 teams move on. Then theres the qualifier competition (where all the teams from the previous competition go to see

if they qualify for a chance at the regionals competition.) : the top 2 teams move

on from qualifier. Next theres the Regional competion. where all the winning teams from the region you live in compete to be the number one team in the region. : the top 2 teams move on and earn there tickets to Disney World, Florida

to compete at the biggest competiton of all, Nationals. At nationals all the teams from every region in the United States compete for 1st place and be crowned number one in the Nation!

here are some videos & pictures that will

explain how all these different types of

cheerleading work:

Dangers Of Cheerleading

in cheerleading there are alot of dangers that teams need to look out for. Also rules that they have to abide by.

In cheerleading it all depends on what league is in, to find out there spacific rules. Youth cheerleading is a less intense program, where rules are alittle more tied down. But teams like allstars, there are less rules that teams have to follow. These days allstar cheerleading is conciderd better then youth. But thats not saying that there are not youth teams out there that canot be better then a allstar team. If a flyer gets dropper or doe something wrong in a stunt things can go wrong. If they land on their head or neck, they could die or become paralyzed, or the most common break something. Another thing that can hurt a cheerleader is the way tumbling is done. If someone isnt taught correctly how to land, start, posistion, or how to do the whole thing in general, the tumbler can be seriously injered. Here are some examples of injury's from tumbling.

  • Ankle sprains
  • Back injuries
  • Head injuries (including concussions)
  • Broken arms
  • Knee injuries
  • Elbow injuries
  • Death

This is why it is important to always learn with pacients by the the right people and always streght before any physical sport or action.

Uniforms

All cheerleading unifroms are different. Some say the teams name, others team inital, anything is possible with a cheerleading uniform. Most all star teams wear unifroms like this:

Very festive and show offy.

But most youth teams that just cheer for their town unfoirm's are more like this:

see how there uniforms are more less deatailed. But still have their team name and colors.

     Bows,Hair and makeup

In cheerleading world, bows are what allow teams to be cocky and eye ketching. Many things on the bow can give a message. Bows can have to do with a teams theme, music, town and colors. But sometimes BIG bows are the way to go. Big bows ketch the judges eyes and sequence even means a team is ligit. Hair is also i big part of apperence in cheerleading. Everyone on a team shouod look the same. Something comanly used in cheerleading is hair pieces. Cheer bows can go from SEQUINS, SPARKLES, METALLICS, LAYERED & BRAID, WILD ANIMAL, CAMO & FLAME PRINTS, STARS & POLKA DOTS, Paw Prints, and also PINWHEEL CHEER BOWS

 Hair:

The next thing i want to talk about is different type of cheerleading shoes. Most of the time a squad will pick the type of shoe according to weather the team will be on a spring mat or a regular cheerleading mat.

heres a spring cheerleading mat:

heres a link to explain how it's made, and of what.

heres a regular cheerleading mat
where most youth cheer competitions take
place on:
Most times 9 mats will be lined up at
a cheer competition. Heres a link to tell you about these mats.

DIFFERENT TYPE OF SHOES.

  • Nfinity
  • Nike
  • Kaepa
  • Adidas
  • New balance
  • Asics
  • Converse
  • ZEPHZ
  • Power
  • Reebok

Some of these types of shoes are ment to be woren on a spring floor.

But others were made for a regular foam cheerleading mat.

RULES

In cheerleading there are alot of rules! These rules keep cheerleaders safe. Theres a rule book to every league or type of cheerleading. Theres rules about the rutine, uniforms, attendance, sportsmanship, competitions, practices, grades, fundriasing, traveling and respect. As you can see a simple cheerleader must know about every one of these rules. And must abide by them.

Heres a website with mostly all the personal rules for a cheerleader:

http://freeholdpopwarner.com/Page.asp?n=12679&org=freeholdpopwarner.com

Before teams can make a rutine to compete with they need to know what it exceptable to put

in or take out. When a team is researching the rules, if they are part of popwarner they will abide by the rules in the 2009 Pop Warner Rule Book (or whatever year the season is taking place in).

Rutines

In cheerleading the rutine is what its all about. Age also does matter in a rutine.  It could depend on the level of dificualty. A ruitne must consist a mixture of dance, a cheer, tumbling, stunting and jumps. Formation and togetherness also has an impact on a rutine and the way it looks.

here are some videos of different type of age groups.

try and see what things get harder and better..

Do you have to have to be experienced to cheer?

Cheerleading isn't just a sport where you have to have talent. Anyone can cheer!

And when i say anyone i mean it. Theres squads out there that can do things you

never thought you would see. Here's an example of some cheering done by

the less healthy.

YouTube plugin error

now this video isnt here for people to laugh at, but it is here

to show that even people who look like they cant do something can!

What else do cheerleaders do?

Although it might seem that all cheerleaders do is dance and and tumble and jump. But theres more to cheerleading then that. Most youth or highschool cheerleading

teams have a certain sport or team who they support. For example Reading Popwarner cheerleads cheer for Popwarner football. But in RMHS theres cheerleaders for Football and basketball. Some highschools even have hockey team cheerleaders. At games cheerleaders have a various numbers of chants for pump up not just the players but the crowd.

heres an exaple of a cheer used at reading games:

WIN

W-I-N , fight to win (clap)

W-I-N , fight to win (clap)

W-I-N , fight to win (clap)

Soo cheerleaders dont just cheer at competions and games, they also help the comunity with

fun fundraisers and helping bussinesses.

When cheerleaders have somewhere where they need to travel to for an event we fundraise.

Teams might have a bake sale, car washes, have shows where people donate and sell calenders.

But sometimes cheerleaders help bussinesses and get a small profit. For example:

last year Reading popwarner got a profit from all the pizzas sold at Gregory's.

So people would order a pizza to support Reading Popwarner and both the store and the teams

get a portion of the money made.

Basics of Cheerleading

Cheerleading is very intense sport. But theres always basics to it. When cheerleaders first learn to cheer

they learn the basics. Basic cheer motions that every cheerleader learns is high v, low v, T, Broken T, Daggers, left K, Right K, Candel sticks and touchdown.

heres a video to show you how:

YouTube plugin error

Other then motions there a couple of easy basic jumps cheerleaders learn off the bat also.

Some basic jumps are Toe touch, Pike jump, Right and Left herkies and Tuck jump.

here are some pictures:

Toetouch                                               Pike Jump                                                 Herkie Jump                                                 Tuck Jump

Lastly another great but dangerous basic of cheerleading is the stunts.

There are many different type of stunts that cheerleaders build.

When cheerleaders are beginers it's to start with a simple theigh stand.

The next things up from a theigh stand would be at prep level. Once

prep level; has been achieved, cheerleaders then move to full exstention.

When a stunt group can build a full exstention with no help it is time to move on

and begin one leg stunts. This is where cheerleaders start with one leg and theigh stands and

build their way up again.

Here are a couple pictures of these stunts:

theigh stand                                                                       Prep Level                                                                            Up to a full

1 Leg theigh stand                                              1 Leg prep Level                                                  1 leg Full

Once these stunts are masturd is stunts get alittle more intense.

Cheerleaders learn to twist cradle and begin basket tosses. But also are

able to put together team stunts.

here are some examples:

In the end the easiest thing to do while competiting is show that your having fun. The first thing judges look for is facial                                          expression. Theres nothing worse then a good cheerleader looking like they're not having fun. Also being a judge and                                                  sitting all day evaluating rutines, cheerleaders who dont want to be there, need to leave. Here are a couple of pictures of pictures                                       of great and exciting cheerleading facial expressions.

I dedicate this page, to a fellow cheerleader, Ashley Burns.

Ashley past away at the age of 14 in 2005. She went to Pope

John Highschool and cheered at East Elite allstars. Ahsley died

from cradling from a stunt landing down in the arms of fellow cheerleaders

during a conditioning class at East Elite Cheer Gym.

RIP ASHLEY
